About Liz
Becoming a dog trainer
Dog training was a natural choice for me. As a child I was always in the company of animals and found myself fascinated by their behavior. I began my career with horses, learning from some of the best in the country. After an injury forced me to leave horses behind, dog training seemed like the only path to follow. I attended a specialized school for dog trainers where I was immersed in hands on training and teaching as well as classroom studies.
Why I Teach
I started out coaching other riders at the barn. It was all very informal, but I discovered joy in sharing my knowledge and watching others succeed. Not only do I love teaching, but I come from a family of teachers, so this is a passion that I grew up with. I bring this joy to you and I'm not satisfied if you aren't successful.
I Understand
While this may have been a natural path, actually being one wasn't so natural. When I started to learn dog training, I struggled a lot. How to hold the leash, when to praise, what to correct. It was all new and awkward and I was often frustrated. But I hung in there and in a few weeks, the mechanics of it got easier.
I've never been interested in owning easy dogs. I've owned dogs with aggression, separation anxiety, obsessive behaviors, reactivity. I've had dogs that were destructive, that didn't learn as quickly, that were a little too clever, that were difficult to motivate.
I know your struggles. I've lived them.
